Here you will find answers to many common questions our patients have after
surgery. In addition, there are several hints, tips, and instructions for you that will help
speed up recovery and make the healing experience as comfortable as possible.
Periodontal Dressings:
A periodontal dressing may be placed to cover treated areas and will often remain intact
until your next appointment. If the
dressing should come off or break there is no cause for alarm. If it becomes uncomfortable

Chewing and Brushing:
Do not chew on the side of your mouth just treated and minimize brushing the area until
sutures have been removed or the area is evaluated 1-2 weeks later.
Sutures:
Dissolvable sutures may be placed and may become loose and fall out after a few days.
Physical Exertion:
Avoid excessive exertion of any type for 24 hours following surgery.
Puffiness and Swelling:
In some cases puffiness or mild swelling my result. This may be kept at a minimum by
holding an ice bag on the outside cheek area, for the first few hours after your surgery
(10 minutes on 10 minutes off up to 24 hours). NOTE: If swelling continues to increase after
two days

Pain and/or Discomfort:
Mild to moderate discomfort is readily controlled with a prescription pain
medicine as directed.
Antibiotic Medication:
If penicillin or other antibiotics are necessary, we will give you a prescription.
Please continue taking the antibiotic as prescribed until finished.
Bleeding:
Occasional blood stain in the saliva may be expected. If some bleeding continues,
rinse with cold water and take a piece of gauze or a cold moist tea bag and cover the
area under pressure for 10-20 minutes or until bleeding minimizes or stops. NOTE: Hot
liquids may stimulate bleeding up to 24 hours following surgery.
Diet:
A nourishing diet of high proteins and plenty of fluids will aid in healing.
Softer foods are recommended during your healing process.
Unpleasant Taste:
If you develop an unpleasant taste, you may gently rinse with water or with a mouth rinse.
A prescription mouth rinse may be prescribed.
Hot and Cold Sensitivity:
After some types of surgery you may experience sensitivity on the surgical area to hot or
cold temperature. This generally resolves in a few weeks. Desensitizing medications can
also be prescribed or applied in our office to resolve sensitivity.
